Diabetic Eye Disorders

Patients with diabetes can have severe problems with the retina, the tissue that lines the back of the eye. "Leaking" blood vessels can lead to the development of a swollen retina with subsequent decreased vision. Poor circulation may allow abnormal blood vessels to grow, which can lead to bleeding within the eye. Untreated, this could result in severe visual loss or even blindness.

Dr. Patrick J. Kelty and Dr. T. Reginald Williams are Graystone Eye's diabetic eye specialists. Both doctors have received training in the diagnosis and treatment of diabetic retinopathy including: interpretation of Fluorescein Angiography which is a photographic intravenous dye study, laser surgery and vitrectomy surgery. Dr. Williams has a special interest in diabetic eye disease and is actively involved in clinical research concerning diabetic retinopathy.

Dr. Kelty and Dr. Williams along with their highly trained staffs employ state-of-the-art techniques and equipment in the diagnosis and treatment of all their retina patients Facilities at Graystone Eye include digital angiography, ocular coherence tomography (3-d retinal imaging) ultrasound imaging of the eye as well as full laser capabilities.

Macular Degeneration

Macular Degeneration affects millions of older Americans. This condition may be subdivided into two broad categories: wet and dry. While the dry form may only require close monitoring, the wet form often can be treated with a laser, or our newer form of intervention called "photodynamic therapy."

Dr. Patrick J. Kelty and Dr. T. Reginald Williams are experts in the treatment of age-related macular degeneration. They and their staffs provide prompt, compassionate, state-of-the-art care for patients affected by this difficult condition. Graystone Eye also offers Low Vision Services to patients requiring special magnification devices as a result of macular degeneration and other eye conditions.

Retinal Detachment

A retinal detachment is usually the result of a tear that has formed in the retina, allowing fluid to collect abnormally beneath this delicate light-sensing tissue. Untreated, retinal detachment may lead to complete blindness.

Dr. Patrick J. Kelty and Dr. T. Reginald Williams at Graystone Eye have vast experience in the surgical treatment of this vision-threatening disorder. Their treatment techniques include laser and gas-bubble therapy as well as scleral buckle and vitrectomy.

Other Disorders of the Retina and Vitreous

Dr. Patrick J. Kelty and Dr. T. Reginald Williams and their expert staffs are well-equipped to diagnose and treat a number of other conditions affecting the retina and vitreous including:

  • Uveitis (inflammation)
  • Infection
  • Retinal blood vessel problems
  • Hereditary retinal disorders including Retinitis Pigmentosa
  • Cystoid Macular Edema (swollen retina)
