Diabetic Eye Disorders

Patients with diabetes can have severe problems with the retina, the tissue that lines the back of the eye. "Leaking" blood vessels can lead to the development of a swollen retina with subsequent decreased vision. Poor circulation may allow abnormal blood vessels to grow, which can lead to bleeding within the eye. Untreated, this could result in severe visual loss or even blindness.

Dr. Patrick J. Kelty and Dr. T. Reginald Williams are Graystone Eye's diabetic eye specialists. Both doctors have received training in the diagnosis and treatment of diabetic retinopathy including: interpretation of Fluorescein Angiography which is a photographic intravenous dye study, laser surgery and vitrectomy surgery. Dr. Williams has a special interest in diabetic eye disease and is actively involved in clinical research concerning diabetic retinopathy.

Macular Degeneration

Macular Degeneration affects millions of older Americans. This condition may be subdivided into two broad categories: wet and dry. While the dry form may only require close monitoring, the wet form often can be treated with a laser, or our newer form of intervention called "photodynamic therapy."

Retinal Detachment

A retinal detachment is usually the result of a tear that has formed in the retina, allowing fluid to collect abnormally beneath this delicate light-sensing tissue. Untreated, retinal detachment may lead to complete blindness.
