Hickory Cornea Specialist Named Medical Director of the NC Eye Bank

Graystone ophthalmologist, Richard I. Chang, MD, has been named medical director of the North Carolina Eye Bank. This voluntary position does not affect his medical practice at Graystone Eye.
 
A native of Beckley,West Virginia, Dr. Chang attended both undergraduate and medical school at Wake Forest University.  He completed his internship at Riverside Regional Hospital in Newport News, VA, and his ophthalmology residency and fellowship in Cornea and External Diseases/Refractive Surgery at theUniversity of Rochester in Rochester, NY. 

The North Carolina Eye Bank is one of the oldest eye banks in the world and was incorporated in 1951.  In his new role, Dr. Chang will oversee quality assurance, staff development and training, in addition to the stringent protocols for tissue donation and procurement.  He will also be called upon to evaluate abnormal tissue as needed.
 
Dr. Chang is a member of the American Medical Association, American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, International Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, Eye Bank Association of America, Paton Society and the N.C. Medical Society.  Dr. Chang is on staff at Catawba Valley Medical Center and Frye Regional Medical Center.
