Good vision develops during childhood when both eyes have normal alignment. Strabismus is a common condition among children. It is visual defect in which the eyes are misaligned and point in different directions. Treatment for strabismus works to preserve sight, straighten the eyes, and restore binocular (two-eyed) vision. In some cases, eyeglasses are prescribed. Other treatments may involve surgery to correct the imbalanced eye muscles. Strabismus may cause reduced vision, or amblyopia, in the weaker eye. Amblyopia is treated by patching the "good" eye. This serves to strengthen and improve vision in the weaker eye. If amblyopia is detected in the first few years of a child's life, treatment is usually successful. Children are an important part of our practice. We request that all minors be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Whether or not you accompany your child, a minor consent form for treatment must be signed by a parent or legal guardian BEFORE any service can be provided.
